Mobile Computing: Make Notebook Batteries Last

Feature: Boosting Your Notebook's Battery

Nothing's worse than having piles of work to finish on an airline flight--and your notebook battery starts to die. Okay, so maybe a dead car battery that leaves you stranded in a steep gulch as flood waters rapidly engulf you is a little worse. But not much.

With some tweaking here and there, you can keep your notebook battery running longer. Read on for details...

Configure Your Notebook's Power Settings

Your notebook's display and hard drive are its two biggest battery hogs. But you can control them by using a Windows XP Control Panel utility called Power Options. (Earlier versions of Windows offer similar power-saving options in the Control Panel, too.)

Go to the Start menu, click Control Panel, and then open Power Options. On the Power Schemes tab, select Portable/Laptop from the top drop-down menu. In the "Settings for" area, you can tell your notebook to act differently depending on the power source. For example, you can set the hard disk to never turn off when the computer is plugged into an AC adapter and to stop spinning after 3 minutes when on battery power. However, I recommend that you not allow hibernation to kick in too early, because notebooks take a minute or so to come out of that state.

After fiddling with the settings, you can save them to the Portable/Laptop scheme or as a new scheme: Click the Save As button, leave "Portable/Laptop" or enter a new name, and click OK.

Use Stand By and Hibernate Appropriately

Windows XP provides two battery-saving sleep modes for your computer: Stand By, which is kind of like snoozing; and Hibernate, which is deep, rapid-eye-movement-style slumber (with snoring provided by the man next to you in coach).

In Stand By mode, your display and hard drive are shut down and all open applications and files are stored in RAM. This allows your notebook to wake up quickly, but a low level of power is required to maintain this somnambular state. Bottom line: Use Stand By for brief intervals when you won't need the computer--you're stretching your legs on a long flight, for instance.

With Hibernate, everything is powered down and the contents of RAM are stored on your hard drive. Hibernate mode uses less power than Stand By, but takes a bit longer to resume. Bottom line: Hibernate is the ticket when you won't be using your computer for a while--you're changing planes at the airport, say--but you want to resume work faster than you could after a complete system shutdown.

When you choose Start, Turn Off Computer in Windows XP, your options are Stand By, Turn Off, and Restart. To Hibernate, place the cursor over Stand By, then hold down Shift and click.

Stick to the Essentials

Windows XP lets you easily prevent scheduled and automated tasks (which can consume battery power) from occurring when you're running on batteries. Here's how to set that up: Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Scheduled Tasks. Right-click a scheduled task in the list (such as Norton AntiVirus) and click Properties. Select the Settings tab. Under Power Management, click to chose the following: "Don't start the task if the computer is running on batteries" and "Stop the task if battery mode begins." Click OK to save your changes.

Dimming your display can save battery power. Most notebooks today include keyboard keys for adjusting brightness and contrast.

PC Card modems, external USB devices, and so on can drain power even when idle.

A wireless network PC Card or built-in chip set can drain power, too.

Listening to a music CD or digital music files on your notebook is another battery drain. Instead, pack a portable MP3 or CD player in your carry-on; better to drain its batteries than your notebook's.

Watching a DVD movie is one of the biggest battery-sucking activities. You could pack a portable DVD player instead, but they're expensive--some go for nearly 00--and it's yet one more thing to pack.

Consider Some Purchases

PDAs can run on batteries far longer than the typical notebook can. So instead of packing your notebook, consider a Pocket PC equipped with a landline or wireless modem and an external keyboard, for example. Sure, the PDA screen is much smaller than a notebook's, and PDA applications are more limited. But you can keep typing hours after your seatmate's ThinkPad has expired.

Another option is AlphaSmart's Dana (0), a Palm OS-based full-size keyboard with an LCD, which can run for up to 25 hours on a single charge. And when its rechargeable battery runs out, you can pop in three AAA batteries and keep going.

If you're in the market for a new notebook, put long battery life high on your list of features. Notebooks based on Intel's new Pentium M, especially those implementing the full Centrino architecture (which includes the Pentium M along with Intel's 855 chip set and the company's 802.11b, or Wi-Fi, hardware), are among the best in terms of battery performance. For example, Toshiba's Centrino-based Tecra M1 lasted 7 hours, 6 minutes--longer than any other notebook we've tested. You should swap in a new battery about every 18 months. Most notebooks today use lithium-ion batteries, which don't have the memory-loss problems of older notebook batteries. Still, even rechargeable lithium-ion batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time. Dealing With Hot Notebook

If you've read our article on the causes and potentially devastating effects of notebook heat, you know that thanks to external temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit,  some notebooks can feel more like portable grills than portable computers.  While inadequate heat dissipation is the manufacturer's fault, users aren't helpless. If your notebook is getting a bit too warm for comfort, there are several settings you can change to make it cooler. While none of these is guaranteed to transform a 110-degree palm rest into an ice machine, the changes can help. A poorly cooled notebook is extremely uncomfortable to use. In fact, though heat-related injuries are rare, some systems actually carry warning labels. For example, many current Toshiba Satellites have stickers affixed to their bottoms which state: "Caution: PC base can become hot! Avoid prolonged contact to prevent heat injury to skin."

Some of the tips below involve editing the advanced power settings in Windows Power Options.  To access the advanced power settings:

1. Open Power Options either by clicking the icon in the All Control Panel Options menu or by double-clicking the Windows battery icon in your system tray.
2. Select Change plan settings next to the power plan you are using (balanced, power saver, etc).
3. Select Change advanced power settings.

The amount of heat given off by a component will be the same no matter what notebook it's used in. The differences from notebook to notebook, however, are based on air and heat flow within the system, the amount of power consumed, and notebook chassis material. While notebooks made from sleek-looking aluminum and other metals are increasingly popular, such systems tend to feel hotter. That's because of differences in thermo-mechanical properties of the materials, according to Rajiv Mongia, principal engineer for Intel's Thermal Technologies team. For example, an aluminum chassis will feel hotter to the touch than a plastic chassis of the same temperature.

1: Enable Active Cooling
Make sure that, in the Windows power settings or in your notebook's proprietary power management software, the highest level of cooling is enabled. The menu option for enabling active cooling varies from notebook to notebook, but in some cases, the option will actually say "active cooling" and in others the option will say "maximum performance" as opposed to "maximum battery life."

2: Enable all power saving options for the CPU, graphics, wireless card, etc.
It's simple physics. The more power your notebook consumes, the more heat it generates. If you're willing to sacrifice a little performance by running your notebook's key components in low power modes, it will generate less heat.

To use less juice and generate less heat, we recommend changing the advanced settings in the Windows power manager's, both for "on battery" and "plugged in" states:

* Wireless Adapter Settings: Maximum Power Saving
* Link State Power Management: Maximum power savings
* Graphics Power Plan: Maximum Battery life or the equivalent, based on what video card your notebook has installed.
* PCI Express -> Link State Power Management: Maximum power savings
* Processor power management -> Maximum processor state: Set to a lower percentage such as 30-percent.

3: Unplug Your Notebook
Some notebooks are manufactured to consume more power (and generate more heat) when plugged in than on battery alone, even with the exact same power settings enabled. After lowering all your power saving settings (as in tip #2), you may want to try pulling the plug.

4: Put the notebook on a table or desk
Many of a notebook's vents are located on the bottom of its chassis, so when you put the notebook on your lap, you're partially obstructing those vents.  And if you put the notebook on a on a fabric surface like a bed or couch, you're really choking its airflow. If the bottom of your notebook is getting really hot, consider putting it on a table or using a lapdesk that sits between you and the notebook.

5: Using a cooling pad
Some might say that this is the most obvious tip and should appear first, but cooling pads add bulk to your notebook bag and make your system less portable. So while cooling pads like the great Cooler Master Notepal U2 may be the only choice for a burning hot notebook, they shouldn't always be your first.

I would like to know what laptop/notebook is the best a college student. I probably need a lot of memory on it and it should be able to fit in a back pack without being to heavy. Also do colleges make you have a certain laptop/notebook? I am going to a community college, would it matter?

The requirements for college are actually some of the lightest, as most of what you do is browse for information/email/course work and word processing.

What you need to look are also the other factors, such as battery life, weight, and what you are going to use it for.

Netbooks : Great for portability, great battery life (up to 7-10 hours in same cases), all in one unit. Negatives : Small keyboard, Small screen, No CD/DVD drive.

Laptops: all around great, however they can be a bit larger and heavier.

I would look for a $ 500 laptop from either HP, Dell, or toshiba

try to get :
Core 2 duo
3 gigs memory

Types Of Notebook Computers

Notebook, notebook computer, laptop, and laptop computer are different terms for a small computer, which is mobile, and weighing about 1 to 6 kg or 2.2 to 18 pounds, depending upon the model. In 1979-1980, Bill Moggridge of GRiD Systems Corp. designed one of the first laptops and named it as the GRiD Compass 1101. About this same time, Sharp Corp.Ltd., announced their laptop Sharp PC-5000.

In 1989, Compaq introduced Compaq LTE, which was a laptop of a smaller size, about the size of an A4 paper notebook, and it popularly came to be known as a notebook computer or notebook. Thereafter the terms laptop and notebook began to be used interchangeably. Nevertheless, the terms, notebook and laptop are incorrect terms, as due to the heat, many laptops cannot be placed on top of the lap, and most notebooks are not the size of an A4 paper notebook. However, what manufacturers usually call as a notebook, end-users prefer to call it as a laptop; hence both the terms are used.

According to the functions and the models of notebooks, they are generally classified as: Ultraportables (screen is diagonally less than 12 inches, weight is 1.7 kg or less); thin-and lights (screen is diagonally from 12 to 14 inches, weight is from 1.8 to 2.8 kg); medium-sized laptops (screen is diagonally from 14 to 15.4 inches, weight is from 3 to 3.5 kg); and desktop replacement computers (screen is diagonally from 17 to 20 inches, weight is 4 to 6 kg).

The concept of laptop was to make a device that could use the same software of a desktop computer, but much smaller in size to enable mobility and support mobile computing (ability to use the computer while in transit). Thus, further innovations have introduced transportables (which can be moved from one place to another without supporting mobile computing); tablets (which feature touchscreens and support mobile computing); ultra mobile PCs (which are very small and compact tablet PCs); internet tablets (which support internet and mobile computing); personal digital assistants (PDAs), which are pocket-sized and support mobile computing; handheld computers, which represent expensive tablets or PDAs; and smartphone, which is a PDA or a handheld computer with cellphone integration. Over the development phases, these classifications got blurry at times, and many machines fused functionalities of other categories.

Notebooks can be used for various purposes. Commercial purposes like attending phone calls, receiving and sending emails and faxes, typing out letters and printing them, making presentations with pie and bar charts, and taking data from one place to another can be achieved by any standard notebook. However, high fliers prefer thin-and-light notebooks and for regular office work, ultraportable notebooks are preferred. Both are wireless notebooks so they can be remotely accessed. Scientific purposes are best suited with a notebook that features fast computing speed, good 2D and 3D graphics display, and a large memory, like desktop replacement notebook, and a thin-and-light notebook. Artistic purposes require animation, 2D and 3D drawings, interior & exterior designing, arranging music compositions, post-production audio-video work, etc., which can be fulfilled by desktop replacements, gaming notebooks, and mainstream notebooks.

Educational institutions normally do not prefer notebooks due to its high chance of being stolen. Additionally, they prefer that their assets do not move around within the premises in the hands of students who may be careless. However, to keep up with the times, and to be considered as techno-savvy, they do invest in notebooks. The types of notebooks best suited for educational purposes are mainstream notebooks, and desktop replacements. Students need a notebook to do projects, prepare study notes, and to play some games in their spare time. Hi there,

You should check out the Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV. It is great for photo editing because it has NVIDIA® GeForce® GTS 350M graphics and an 1.73 GHz Intel Core i7-740QM processor. It also has 640 GB of hard drive space.
